This week in Philly: Aug. 31-Sept. 6

A few ways to spend your week in (and out of) Philly.

A few ways to spend your week in (and out of) Philly.

Monday, Aug. 31

Spend an afternoon touring the places where Cape May's finest libations are made. This self-guided tour, starting at noon, will let you peruse at your own pace the selected wineries and brewery — Natali Vineyards, Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery and Cape May Brewing Company — and taste their products. You can buy tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street or at the Physick Estate (1048 Washington St.).

All throughout August, the East Passyunk PHS Pop-Up Garden (Wharton St. and S. 9th St.) has hosted 6 p.m. gardening seminars. This final Monday in August is no different. Come to learn what vegetables to plant now for a fall harvest.

Tuesday, Sept. 1

Chef Marcie Turney & Valerie Safran's newest restaurant, Bud & Marilyn's (13th and Locust Streets), featuring retro-American favorites like meatloaf, kielbasa and crispy cheese curds, is now open and begs for a try. They open at 5 p.m.

You've probably seen him on-screen, now see him on-stage. Billy Bob Thornton's rockabilly band, The Boxmasters, come to the Sellersville Theater (Main St. and Temple Ave., Sellersville) to perform at 8 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 2

The East Passyunk neighborhood have been embracing the summer months with evening shopping, farmers market and restaurant deals during Passyunk Passeggiata on Wednesday nights. All good things must come to an end and this Wednesday marks the final time to head out to the shops (that'll stay open until 8 p.m.), enjoy happy hour specials, live music and farmers market at the Singing Fountain (S. 11th St. and East Passyunk Ave.) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Not ordinarily a spot thought of for live music, the Wagner Free Institute of Science (1700 W. Montgomery Ave.) hosts a musical performance of Victorian-era music in a Mexican twist from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Be a part of a larger project, too, since the performance will be filmed for a video art work. The evening is free and includes open reign to the institute's collection.

Thursday, Sept. 3

Go back to school in style (or just back to work tomorrow) after attending this back-to-school concert hosted by Mo'ne Davis. The bill totes hip hop artists Mookie Mook, Summer Valentine, Role Models, Dollar Boyz, Z Dub, Pandemonia and DJ Young Gunna and starts at 5 p.m. at the TLA (334 South St.).

Philadelphia Artists' Collective's production of forbidden love story, "The Captive," draws heavily on venue location: Society Hill's Physick House (321 S. 4th St.). The 1926 play about a diplomat's daughter who harbors a life-changing secret opens at 8 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 4

Forget fall as a season, it's all about the action of falling. To help shepherd in the fall season, Ocean City invites participants of all ages to perform their most dramatic, slow-mo "plops" onto the beach in hopes of becoming the King or Queen of Plop. Register starting at 10:30 a.m. at the 9th Street Beach.

Feed me, Seymour. "Little Shop of Horrors" screens in the fresh air at Clark Park (43rd St. and Baltimore Ave.) at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 5

Part two in a fantasy-musical film franchise, "Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival" screens at the Ritz East (125 S. 2nd St.) at 11:30 p.m. followed by a Q&A with the film's creators.

Consume calories while you burn them. Kind of like a beer mile, this race is all beef. Runners will start by eating a burger and follow that up with running a mile. Then you'll eat another burger and run another mile. Seems simple, right? The Dine and Dash Burgers and Trail Race begins at 10:30 a.m. at 2nd and State Streets in Hamburg.

Sunday, Sept. 6

Free. Free is good. Get free admission to the Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway) starting at 9 a.m. It doesn't end there. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Mural Arts will be holding workshops, Shane Confectionary will hold a candy-decorating session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Walé Oyéjidé, designer of Ikiré Jones menswear, will hold a talk at 2 p.m.

You don't need a beach to hang ten. City Tap House University City (3925 Walnut St.) welcomes on-land surfers for a mechanical surf competition. Sign-ups begin at 11 a.m. and high tide is at noon. Cap it off with brews from Firestone Walker and Lagunitas.
