The inaugural Philly Feminist Zine Fest set to take place August 26th

The 2012 Philly Feminist Zine Festival aims to showcase over 30 "zinesters" from Philadelphia, as well as serve as a fundraiser for Project SAFE. Come support the cause on Aug. 26th at William Way Community Center.

In an effort to raise awareness about health and safety for Philadelphia sex workers, as well as connecting art and literature with activism, Kristen Asher, Taryn Hipp, Jen King, and Sarah Rose have come together to launch the Philly Feminist Zine Fest.  Inspired by the NYC Feminist Zine Fest held earlier this year in Brooklyn, the Philly version plans to be just as successful.

The Philly Feminist Zine Festival will also serve as a fundraiser for Project SAFE, a local organization dedicated to promoting health, safety,m and advocacy for Philadelphia sex workers. From art displays, zine showcases, and many other activities, this festival plans to shed light on a number of issues affecting women today.  Here's a look at the schedule for the 26th:

- "From Smoochin' to Sexin': Navigate, Negotiate, Communicate" presented by Screwsmart from noon to 1 p.m. This local group of sex educators promotes sex positivity. The workshop will focus on building communication and negotiation skills around sex.

- "Decriminalizing Sex Work" presented by members of Project Safe from 1 to 2 p.m. This workshop will discuss both harm-reduction and the effects of criminalizing sex work.

- "Soapbox Alternative Zine Structure" presented by The Soapbox from 2 to 3 p.m. Learn several fold-and-cut book structures that lend themselves to photocopy reproduction. Create mini-books, a maze book and a book that resembles a house.

- "Putting the Pain to Paper: Writing about the Tuff Stuff" presented by For the Birds Collective from 3 to 4 p.m. Explore the potential of writing and self-publishing as part of a healing process in dealing with painful experiences, both on a personal and community level.

- "How to be an Ally to Sex Workers" presented by members of SWOP and PERSIST Health Project from 4 to 5 p.m. This discussion will include a guided values assessment of participants' feelings and concerns about the sex trade and suggestions on best practices for family and professionals.

As a prelude to this event, a zine reading will be held at 7 PM on Friday, August 24th at Wooden Shoe Books, 704 South St.
