Sudsy September: Craft beer events happening this month

Cheers to your hard work, your upcoming week, and most importantly you. Instead of sitting on the couch cracking a cold one this weekend, check out the beer fests in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas -- three are taking place on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Cheers to your hard work, your upcoming week, and most importantly you. Instead of sitting on the couch cracking a cold one this weekend, check out the beer fests in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas -- three are taking place on Saturday, Sept. 6. Get off your butt and try out the various styles and flavors of beer. You never know, you may find that special porter your taste buds will never forget.

What's cooler than drinking beers outside on a sunny day? Drinking outside on a boat, and this isn't your typical boat, this is Battleship New Jersey (100 Clinton St.). Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, beer aficionados can taste more than 50 craft beers and ciders while enjoying classic rock during the 4th Annual WMGK Brew Fest. With the purchase of your ticket ($45), not only will you get to enjoy music and drinks, you also get a tour of this historic war vessel.

Soccer reigns heavily at PPL Park (1 Stadium Dr.) in Chester but on Saturday, Sept. 6 beers will be scoring the goals as the Delaware River Craft Brewfest takes place at 3 p.m. Guests can quench their thirst on quality craft imports, ciders, and beers that are not too often seen (Troegs Scratch Series). General admission is $45 but for the die-hard beer fans, VIP tickets are $60, and gets you entry at 2 p.m. for a chance to talk with brewers and taste beers not offered in the general admission session.

Lancaster isn't just known for buggy rides and farm animals, it's also known as a town that knows its hops. On Saturday, Sept. 6, Downtown Lancaster holds its 2014 Craft Beer Fest and is throwing it bigger than ever this year with a beer garden ranging an entire block. Admission is $40 and lets you sample all the 3oz. pours you want, or can handle. The event takes place at 4 p.m. and can be found at Binns Park (N. Queen St.).

Other beer fests you can expect this month:

On Sunday, Sept. 14, take a walk on the wild side with crafty beers during Elmwood Park Zoo's Oktoberfest (1661 N. Harding St.). For general admission ($40) guests receive access to the zoo, live animal encounters, beer sampling, and access to food trucks. If you want more for your roar, VIP is $75 and gives you exclusive beer sampling, VIP section access, and an all-you-can-eat menu provided by Ralph's of South Philly. The event starts at noon.

Newtown officially changes its name to "brewtown" as the craft beers will pour starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Stocking Works building (410 South State St.) on Saturday, Sept. 20. Expect local beers like Crooked Eye and Dock Street Brewing to be poured, as well as national favorites like Deschutes and Great Lakes Brewing Company. General admission (2 p.m. entry) is $40, and VIP tickets, which gets early access and first pour of the beers, are $75.

End the month with the perfect pour on Sunday, Sept. 28 as the downtown district of Lititz (Main St.) holds its 2014 Beer Fest. For $40, taste and sample 30 regional and national offerings from notable breweries like 21st Amendment, Stone Brewing, and Victory just to name a few. Want to try something not found in your typical beer stores? A local homebrew tent will be present for attendees to taste some homemade suds, followed by the crowning of the best brewed beer. The fun starts at 2 p.m.

Remember to pace yourself during these events, or you'll end up forgetting about yeast-erday.
