Round-up: 5 ways to beat the heat

Philly, it is HOT outside. The weekend weather forecast is looking like it's going to be record breaking. Saturday, temperatures are reaching up to 102 degrees and well, phew, we've got just the thing for you. We've compiled a list of 5 ways that you can beat the heat:

1. Refresh yourself with frozen treats
Sometimes beating the heat is as simple as sipping on your favorite icey treat. Philly has an abundance of frozen options that will have you forgetting about this heat wave. If it’s milkshakes that you’re craving, try PYT, Nifty Fifty’s, or Shake Shack to get your fix. If you’d rather be scooping it out with a spoon instead of sipping on it, we adore Capogiro, Scoop Deville and Franklin Fountain as options, and don’t forget Morgan’s Pier serves up our favorite tricycle pushing ice cream slingers Little Baby’s Ice Cream.
If you're looking for a more tropical or fruit filled option, we love John’s Water Ice in South Philly but Rita’s and Philly Flavors are obviously great options as well. Now, if you’re looking to take it up another level, Fat Tuesdays on South Street holds the coveted frozen octane drink that will literally have you forgetting about the heat, in addition to their assortment of frozen daiquiris. The frozen blood O at El Vez and the Lemonannas at Zahav are always a top choice too.

Looking to not only beat the heat, but avoid it all together? We don’t blame you. There are some great indoor options around the city that you’ll want to get to, and not just because they’re air conditioned. Stop by the Franklin Institute for their Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition to see one of the most comprehensive collections of ancient artifacts from Israel ever organized.
If that’s not your cup of tea, hop over the Schuylkill River and check out the happenings at the Adventure Aquarium which is also a guaranteed fun time. Another cool option if the movies! Everyone knows that the air conditioner is always on arctic blast at any movie theater and there are plenty of brand new flicks that have recently come out, so head on over to The Pearl, UA Riverview Plaza or the Ritz, purchase some popcorn and let the cool air blow over your sun scorched bodies.

Not looking to let the heat defeat you? We give major props to those of you who use the heat to its full advantage. If you’re looking to embrace the sun, try kayaking/canoeing on the Schuylkill River and the Delaware Waterfront.
If you’re not up for something quite so active, take a dip in one of the many pools planted all over the city. We’ve already told you about North Shore Beach Club, but if you’re not looking to spend money, try out some public pools such as Marian Anderson at 17th and Fitzwater, Northern Liberties at 321 Fairmount Ave., or the Y at 13th and Christian St. All public pools are free, just how we like it.

In heat like this, it’s always hard to leave the house, so don’t. Invite your friends over (sorry, SOMEBODY has to leave their house), crank up the A.C. or put your fan on full blast and use some of these fun tips that you can do at home:
- Fill up a squirt bottle with water and put it in your fridge. When you’re coming in and out of the house, squirting yourself with ice cold water will feel amazing.
- Get over to the dollar store and buy some water guns, a pack of balloons, and buckets! Remember those summer days when you were a kid and you and your friends used to have epic water wars?
- Using a fan in this heat often just blows hot air all over you, for a quick fix, put a bowl of ice water in front of your fan and enjoy the cold breeze.
- Barbeque! We know the fourth of July is over and you’ll have to step out of your house for this one but what better way to embrace the heat than to use it on delicious food.

Can’t stand the heat? Get out of Philly! Bucks County is only a short drive away and it has lots to offer. One of our favorite things is tubing down the Delaware River at Bucks County River Country. Aside from their strange commercials, it's actually really dope. Bring a large group of friends, or bring your boo and grab a snuggle tube. If you don’t have a car, rent a zip car or take the train.
If you’re looking for a more leisurely day, the beach is always an option. Head down to Spring Lake, Wildwood, Belmar or Sea Isle for the day and enjoy the sun and waves. Some of these places have fees to get on the beach, so remember to bring a little cash. Pack a cooler, grab some friends, and you’re set for the day.
Stay cool Philly, you know the rules.
