Pop-up parklets to check out during Park(ing) Day

A little bit whimsical and a lot of green and artistic, PARK(ing) Day encourages urban creativity on a small scale. Throughout the day on Friday, Sept. 18, over 50 mini parks, or “parklets” will pop up at various locations in the city from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transforming metered parking spaces, the parklets will encompass 170 square feet and will be designed by local artists, activists, planners, business owners and more.

A little bit whimsical and a lot of green and artistic, PARK(ing) Day encourages urban creativity on a small scale. Throughout the day on Friday, Sept. 18, over 50 mini parks, or "parklets" will pop up at various locations in the city from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transforming metered parking spaces, the parklets will encompass 170 square feet and will be designed by local artists, activists, planners, business owners and more.

Out of the dozens of creatively designed spaces, here are a few not to miss.

Fall down the rabbit hole on the 1700 Block of Chestnut St. for Langan Engineering and Environmental Services' Wonderland Park.

Vintage shop Moon + Arrow (754 S. 4th St.) brings the woods to the city.

SEPTA celebrates sustainability on the 500 Block of Market Street.

From noon until 7 p.m., Saint Benjamin Brewing Company (1710 N. 5th St.) will have beers for sale and sampling.

We've begun building our park for Park(ing) day this Friday! We have some great wood found on the second floor of our building. We will be open Friday from 12-7 pm serving pints for $5 and we will have Joe's Chips for sale to munch on. The Philadelphia Parking Authority keeps it green with their recycling-themed parklet at 7th and Market Streets. Win prizes, create art with recycled materials and more.

Utilize the city's bikeshare program and head over to Indego's setup at 1600 Chestnut St.

After park hopping, stop by the Philadelphia Center for Architecture (1218 Arch St.) at 5:30 p.m. for a party with all the park designers and a talk from author Mike Lydon.
