Philadelphia revs up for Philly Beer Week

There's no doubt that Philly Beer Week is one of the most exciting and fun times of the year to be a beer lover in Philly. As Executive Director Don Russell remarked, "Philly treats beer like it does the Declaration of Independence!"

There’s no doubt that Philly Beer Week is one of the most exciting and fun times of the year to be a beer lover in Philly. As Executive Director Don Russell remarked, “Philly treats beer like it does the Declaration of Independence!”

Dupont Speciale Belge

Beer lovers gathered at the Four Seasons With Love Beer Garden to celebrate the preview event for  Philly Beer Week and sample Dupont Speciale Belge, a Belgian ale brewed exclusively for PBW at Brasserie Dupont in Tourpes, Belgium by master brewer Olivier Dedeycker and Iron Hill Maple Shade head brewer Cris LaPierre.


Philly Beer Week is a 10-day celebration that kicks off with the Opening Tap on Friday June 1st with Mayor Nutter at the Independence Visitor Center. New for 2012 is a special one hour V.I.P Session held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that will cost $200 per person, and include a selection of special beers paired with food; guests of this VIP session will also receive a complimentary beer-stein and gift bag. General admission will cost $40 and festivities begin at 7:30 p.m.


Some of the breweries that’ll be present at Opening Tap include: Dock Street, Dogfish Head, Flying Fish, Iron Hill, Nodding Head, Philadelphia Brewing Company, Prism, Round Guys, Sly Fox, Stoudts, Victory, among others. The With Love Beer Garden will be open Monday June 4th through Friday June 8th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each evening a different brewery will be featured and guests will be able to meet the brewers and taste a specially brewed beer for the event.


This year’s line-up includes Bill Covaleski of Victor Brewing Company pouring the beloved Victory Summer Love Ale on Monday June 4th. Philadelphia Brewing Company will be pouring Pennsylvania Pale Ale, Walt Wit, and the seasonal Fleur de Lehigh on Tuesday June 5th. Prism, Evil Genius and Round Guys will serve their collaborative beer Brewvolution No. 1, a 7.6% 76 IBU Belgian Black IPA along with other varieties from their breweries on Wednesday June 6th. On Thursday June 7th, Brian O’Reilly of Sly Fox Beer will challenge his fellow Philly brewers to a game of “Can Jam”, and on Friday June 8th, Rosemarie Certo of Dock Street Brewing Company will unveil a collaborative beer with the Four Seasons Hotel called Caliente Golden Ale, a traditional Belgian Strong Ale brewed with Agave Nectar and chiles. Beer-friendly food such as The Beer Garden Burger, Shrimp Taco, Port Richmond Kielbasa and Lancaster Chicken Wings will be also be available. This is a pay-as-you-go event.
If you want even more time to hang out with some of the brewers check them out at the Forum Of The Gods on Wednesday June 6th at 2 p.m. at the Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant. Tickets are $25 to this round-table talk between Colby Chandler of Ballast Point, Mark Edelson of Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, Rosemarie Certo of Dock Street, Paul Kavulak of Nebraska Brewing Company and Greg Koch of Stone Brewing Company.

By the time it’s all over we’ll surely be longing for next year’s Philly Beer Week!
