Happy spring!

For an opening day: Starting at noon, Franklin Square (200 6th Street), officially opens for the spring season with flower planting, carousel rides and sample Cake Shakes from SquareBurger.

For a treat: Marking the first day of spring, Rita's Italian Ice (locations here) will be, for the 23rd year, handing out free Italian ices from noon to 9 p.m.

For an artist visit: Jessica Hans, one of the exhibiting artists at Savery Gallery's (319 N. 11th St.) "Cones Look Like Cowled Monks," will speak about her work and the collaborative exhibit starting at 7 p.m. Enjoy refreshments from MOM's Organic and hang around, the entire showcase runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

For a Hollywood-level talk: Cheryl Boone Isaacs, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, comes to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (824 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr) at 7 p.m. to discuss her career in film and exclusive behind-the-scenes details on the planning of the Oscars.

For a flick: Vinyl Revival (35-37 N. Lansdowne Ave., Lansdowne) has partnered with Film Festival Flix, an independent film distribution group, to bring independent, art and foreign films to the record store's movie theater. Tonight will see at 7:30 p.m. screening of "Sarah Prefers to Run," the story of a competitive youth athlete.
