14 big Philly area events to look forward to this spring

Spring’s big events return with a comforting predictability.

Spring's big events return with a comforting predictability.

Just as cabin fever sets in, along come the Auto Show, Flower Show, Furniture Show, and Flyers Wives Carnival to ease symptoms. Then, by the time the tulips bloom, Philadelphia's outdoor festival season comes on strong.

Two noteworthy changeups this year are the all-new Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival, slated to set Franklin Square aglow with giant LED light sculptures from late April into June, and the return — after a bye year — of the massive Broad Street fair that closes out the Kimmel Center's biennial PIFA festival.

And if you're counting the days until Philly Beer Week in early June — the traditional nightcap to spring — you can get your pregame on a month beforehand, when some of the world's best craft brewers convene here in May for the World Beer Cup (a.k.a. "The Olympics of Beer Competitions").
