PHS Pop-up Garden adds to the outdoor ambiance with special events in August

With pop-ups, well, popping up everywhere this summer, it becomes hard to keep track of which spots to frequent. However, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop-up Garden on South Street keeps it real with featured events throughout the month to add to the already enticing tropical-themed space.

With pop-ups, well, popping up everywhere this summer, it becomes hard to keep track of which spots to frequent. However, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop-up Garden on South Street keeps it real with featured events throughout the month to add to the already enticing tropical-themed space.

Set for this month are Monday movie nights with the Philadelphia Film Society on Mondays Aug. 11 and 25. Starting at dusk — between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. — “Jaws” (Aug. 11 with $4 throwback Narraganset beers) and “The Great Outdoors” (Aug. 25) will help kick off the series, which PHS will extend into the fall.

Prior to Monday, Aug. 25’s viewing of the Dan Aykroyd and John Candy flick, PFS will hold a 6 p.m. Movie Quizzo night complete with prizes for those with the most cinematic knowledge.

Tuesdays are toned down with acoustic performances from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays Aug. 12, 19 and 26. Spokey Speaky — who played at this year’s Reggae in the Park — frontman Jeff Ferrara takes musical duties the first week, blues rocker Brian LaPann follows and soul singer Dan Avery rounds out the month.

You can never have too much of a good thing. After Center City Sips ends at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, the garden keeps the party going with DJ Serop from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Wednesday in August: 13, 20 and 27.

Every month Unite Fitness hosts a 5K fun run starting from the garden at 6 p.m. This month it takes place on Thursday, Aug. 21 for fitness enthusiasts of all abilities. (It's also encouraged you finish off the run with a cold one, but who's complaining?) Can’t make this one? No worries – they’ll continue into the fall.

This month’s food truck offerings include The Tot Cart, Phoebe’s BBQ, Poi Dog and more and will be on-site 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 5 p.m. to midnight Fridays, 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturdays and noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

The garden is open at 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays and at noon on the weekends through mid-October.
