Neighborhood guide: Spending time around Temple University

Even if you're a proud alumnus, new facilities are popping up left and right, so there's always something new to see and do.

Take a day and discover what the "cherry and white" has to offer.


Places to hangout

Cecil B. Moore Plaza  (Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Broad Street)

Grab lunch and enjoy this peaceful spot right off Broad Street. The urban plaza is layered with brick ledges, grass, and sculpted blocks perfect to soak up the sun. If you're into skateboarding, here is your sanctuary.

The Bell Tower/Beury Beach (13th Street between Norris Street and Montgomery Avenue)

A place where tons of students relax during their breaks and on weekends. The Bell Tower area is wide enough to fit hundreds of people. In the warmer weather, folks come here to catch some rays or to just kick it with their pals and people watch as students travel from class to class.

Liacouras Walk (1810 Liacouras Walk)

Another great people-watching area, this stretch lined with snake-shaped ledges is a popular hangout spot for students before and after class. Many shops surround the walk such as Saxby's Coffee, 7-Eleven, Maxi's Bar, Philly Pretzel Factory, and more. Pep rallies showing school spirit often happen along this walk.

Founders Garden (13th Street and Liacouras Walk)

In memory of Temple's first president, Russell H. Conwell, this garden is a nice place to read a book or enjoy lunch on a beautiful day.

TU Fitness (TUF) (1600 N. Broad St.)

Located on the second floor, TUF's gym includes cardio and strength training, and a circuit and stretching section. While you are exercising, the large windows will give you a great view of Broad Street and a large chunk of the campus. Guests are permitted for a $12 fee.

Independence Blue Cross Recreation Center (1701 N. 15th St.)

Three floors of fitness and sporting activities make this a prime spot for students. For free weights, the first floor is the place to go. For cardio, weightlifting, and racquetball, the second floor is your best bet. For those into running (without the use of machines), there's an indoor track on the third floor. Guest passes are permitted and are $12.

Pearson McGonigle Hall (1800 N. Broad St.)

A renovated building perfect for sports training. It's includes a rock climbing wall, swimming pools, and equipment available to rent such as basketballs, soccer balls, tennis racquets, volleyballs and more. There's a fitness mezzanine for students who want to work on cardio, improve their boxing skills, or even play Xbox Kinect and Nintendo Wii.

Geasy Field Complex  (1901 N. 15th St.)

This outdoor facility offers a grass oval that houses a running track, and turf fields designed for lacrosse, softball, field hockey, and flag football. Nighttime isn't a problem here either, bright lights surround the entire outdoor section.


In need of a buzz

Draught Horse (1431 Cecil B. Moore Ave.)

Draught Horse is a great place for a drink and a bite. Aside from the daily the selection of crafts and menu of eats, the bar offers drink specials every day, especially on Wednesday. Wild Wednesdays feature $1 Bud Lights, $3 mixed drinks, and live music.

Masters (1535 N. Carlisle St.)

A fairly new addition to the Temple bar scene, Masters Bar is a two-story establishment: The downstairs bar is a great place to socialize and brainstorm for your newest group assignment. Upstairs is the 'Study' which, contrary to its name, caters to the nightlife-seeking crowd with DJs and dance parties.

Maxi's (1926 Liacouras Walk)

A perfect spot for kids in need of a drink right after class, Maxi's is conveniently located right on Liacouras Walk. Not only does this bar serve a wide range of bottles and drafts, but you can order their renowned pizza and other grill items.

Pub Webb (1527 Cecil B. Moore Ave.)

A bar that attracts residents and students, Pub Webb offers craft beers, cocktails, and a food menu featuring burgers, wings, salads, and more. Some weekday specials to enjoy are Taco Tuesdays and Slider Wednesdays. There's an area at the bar local DJs and artists perform here on a regular basis.


Eats and treats

Food Trucks Galore

No Philly college campus is complete without food trucks. Temple University is in no short supply! Placed along the campus streets, cuisines of all flavors can be found around every corner. If you're in need of a burger, Burger Tank is your calling. Try the pyro burger! For French flavor, The Creperie is always a must-go. If you love egg sandwiches for breakfast, make your way toward the Sexy Green Truck. Have a sweet tooth? Treat yourself to the beloved Insomnia Cookie truck. Need a caffeine kick? Cloud Coffee is located outside of Tyler School of Art and is there for you after you pulled an epic all-nighter.

Anderson Food Court

Walk right out of the Tech Center, Anderson or Gladfelter Hall, and the aroma of the food court will pull you in the right direction. From coffee to pizza, the shops along the court will have something for you. A student favorite is Richie's. Go for the buffalo chicken cheesesteak.

Valaida S. Walker Food Court (13th Street and Montgomery Avenue)

One of the easier to discover food courts on campus, this hall offers a wide range of options. Guests can enjoy bites from Einstein Bagels and Nuaji Sushi. This location is also known as the Student Center.

Morgan Hall (1603 N. Broad St.)

A new building means more food options on campus. There are two floors of flavor that feature the legendary Tony Luke's, WokStar, Southside Diner, Intelligensia Bistro, a buffet, and more.


Late-night eats

City View Pizza (1434 Cecil B. Moore Ave.)

You can't go wrong at City View when in need of a quick, late-night bite. Enjoy specialty pizzas like BBQ chicken, grinder sandwiches, pasta dishes, and more. The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday noon to 10 p.m.

Jimmy John's (1605 N. 15th St.)

If you like your hoagies quick, Jimmy John's is your destination. Pick from a wide range of choices such as tuna, turkey, roast beef, and even veggie for those who prefer their hoagies meatless. The hours are Monday, Tuesday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Wednesday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.

U Got Munchies (2012 N. Broad St.)

The name pretty much says it all: This is a go to spot for late-night eats. This joint serves plenty of burger combos (with a beef or vegetarian black bean patty). Some must-try menu options: the Red Eye (cheddar, egg, bacon, ketchup), Locos #2 (Doritos, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream) and the Kegstand(onion rings, swiss, lettuce, honey mustard). Hours are Monday through Wednesday and Sunday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Thursday through Saturday 4 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Philly Style (2010 N. Broad St.)

Located right next to U Got Munchies, Philly Style is a good late-night stop if burgers aren't your thing. The menu is your typical pizza shop offerings. They dish out cheesesteaks, strombolis, and sandwiches which are perfect for the late night muncher. Hours are Monday thorugh Wednesday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.


For a visual treat

The Pearl Theatre (1600 N. Broad St.)

Relax after class with a movie and some popcorn. The Pearl Theatre always has the latest movies and offers discount tickets to all visitors on Tuesdays.

Liacouras Center (1776 N. Broad St.)

This venue is the home of the Temple Owls basketball team. In addition to sporting events, the center also hosts concerts, comedy, and dramatic performances.

Temple Performing Arts Center (1837 N. Broad St.)

Visitors can get a look at the fine performing art skills Temple University students bring to the stage. In addition to live performances, the center hosts film screenings and community events.
