Kids To Do: Grandma saves the day!

The Dragon King

Please Touch Museum (4231 Avenue of the Republic)
7 p.m., Friday, $15.

The land has been blighted by drought and the power to restore it belongs to an elusive creature of myth and magic. A hero is needed to bring it all back.

No this isn't another story about the 2016 presidential race. It's the premise of The Dragon King, adapted by Tanglewood Marionettes, the talented Massachusetts troupe. Based on Chinese folklore, it tells of a brave grandmother's voyage to the bottom of the sea to persuade the underwater dragon monarch to unleash the rains.

This one is best suited to those ages 5 and older; it could be a bit intense for small fry. (And as for the political fairy tales, we could all use a break, right?)

Flubber

Bryn Mawr Film Institute (824 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr)
11 a.m. Saturday, $5; $4 ages 12 and under.

It's difficult to imagine anyone topping Fred MacMurray in the 1961 Disney classic The Absent-Minded Professor, but if anyone could come close, it would be Robin Williams. The 1997 remake Flubber features the prof's high-powered goo as an animated character and a cute little love-struck robot sidekick, but it's Williams zany yet restrained performance that makes the whole thing work. (There's rumors that he did enough improv for an entire second version of the movie -- let us see it!)

Balloon Freak John Cassidy

Colonial Theatre (227 Bridge St., Phoenixville)
2 p.m. Saturday, $6.50.

He's the man who holds the record for making a poodle out of a balloon, but maybe it's that part where he climbs into a six-foot creation that earned him the moniker Balloon Freak John Cassidy. It's always a great show with the magician and comedian, but it's best for ages 6 and older.
