Kick off Fourth of July with Wawa's annual Hoagie Day

This year marks the 21st year in which the inaugural Hoagie Day was celebrated. In 1992, the Hoagie was proclaimed the "Official Sandwich of Philadelphia" by Mayor Rendell.

This year's Hoagie Day began early this morning, Tuesday, July 2, with 200 Wawa associates helping make history by building a 4 ½ ton hoagie at the National Constitution Center. In addition to building the gigantic hoagie, they will be sending 5,000 hoagies over to Philabundance.

At noon, WMMR's Preston Elliot will announce the official start of the Hoagie Day festivities. Mayor Michael Nutter will join The Color Guard, from the Army National Guard, as they march in the 4 ½ ton hoagie that will be served to the masses. Following the ceremony, members of the Philadelphia Police Department, Fire Department, National Air Guard and Army National Guard will compete in a hoagie building competition. The winners receive checks to the charities of their choice.

Attendees will get to enjoy free hoagies, beverages, giveaways and a concert by the USO Show Troupe until from 12 - 2 pm. There will also be a Letter-Writing Station, where guests can write words of encouragement

If hoagies aren't enough to convince you, the National Constitution Center will be offering free admission from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm. for their History of the Hoagie in America exhibit and everything else the museum has to offer.
