KAWS exhibit to open at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in October
KAWS returns his work to Philadelphia for an exhibition that will extend into January of 2014 beginning this October.
Contemporary, Brooklyn-based artist KAWS made his big Philadelphia debut when his famous traveling statue, COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH), was installed at 30th Street Station during the months of April and May of 2013. The installation was meant to call attention to a forthcoming exhibit in collaboration with Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
This October, the artist will return once again for a very special exhibition, KAWS @PAFA. Beginning October 12, KAWS' work will be featured both inside and outside of the legendary artistic institution. A brand new nine-foot sculpture will be displayed on the pedestal right above the front entrance of the Historic Landmark Building. This installation will mark a series of yearlong installations that will be a part of PAFA's Sculpture Plinth Exhibition Program – a rotating series that will show a full spectrum of American art. Once you walk through the entranceway, you can feast your eyes on 60 amazing KAWS pieces ranging from paintings to sculptures – some of which were created just for this exhibition. The exhibit will be on display until January 5, 2014.
PAFA will be hosting a special opening reception on October 11 from 8-11 p.m. The event is free for all PAFA members; staff and students whole general admission tickets are available for $10 in advance, $15 at the door. More info can be found here.
