It’s a cyclist’s world: What to see and do at the Philly Bike Expo
Transcending just a childhood pastime, cycling is honored as a facet of both urban and suburban lifestyle, an athletic endeavor, and a way of life on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9 for the Philly Bike Expo, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch St.).
Over the course of the two days, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, bike aficionados can mingle with other riders on group outings, sit in on seminars, and even test ride bikes.
Learn a thing or two about bicycle design, cycling to work and more at the expo's seminars. For an hour, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, discuss the Philadelphia Bike Share Program or get your structural questions answered from a panel of six bicycle builders at 4:30 p.m., also on Saturday.
Sunday, Nov. 9's talks include a noon discussion for women on how to master the commute via bike — and what to wear — and learn the history of Brooks England, leather saddle manufacturer, at 3 p.m.
A series of six group rides will depart from the expo and various locations, giving attendees a chance to stretch their legs with representatives from bike shops and other groups.
Take a break from the indoor excitement on Saturday, Nov. 8 with a 2 p.m. ride, taking cyclers through the trails of Lemon Hill, the Boxer Trail, Belmont, the Philadelphia Pumptrack, and back to the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Three 90-minute tours, lead by Philly Bike Tour Co. and departing at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. from the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch St.), will take riders through the city, seeing landmarks and museums on Sunday, Nov. 9. Bring your own bike!
Other activities include a test ride area, open during exhibiting hours both days at the expo (helmet needed, some will be supplied); two-wheeled themed kids activities courtesy of the Please Touch Museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9; bike fittings at 1:30 p.m. both days, and more.
