Michael Johnson has been making music for a long time. First as Nonsense Goes Mudslide, and now as Ape School. He’s played alongside the likes of Daedelus, Human Television and Kurt Vile but on April 28th, Johnson’s new songs will see the light of day.
Friday night, join Johnson and the rest of the members who will make up Ape School for the CD release party at Johnny Brenda’s. Also playing are Buffalo Stance and The Armchairs.
The self-titled album features 13 tracks recorded in Johnson’s office, a uArts recording studio. Mainly improvised using a giant Moog Modular synth, Ape School has the droney feel of heavy shoegaze and the poppy hooks of certain Outkast songs.
Oddly enough, Johnson has played with Lilys, who opened for My Bloody Valentine back in September in New York City. It’s a small world, after all.
Check Ape School out if you don’t really know what you like. You’re bound to find something you dig.
Ape School with Buffalo Stance and The Armchairs, start at 9pm. 4.17.09 at Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N Frankford Ave. Tickets: $10. 21+.
