Give local parks some love during LOVE Your Park Week

Earth Day has come and gone but there’s still time to show off your green thumb. The Fourth Annual LOVE Your Park Week brings environmental service projects, parties and activities to area green spaces from Saturday, May 9 through Saturday, May 16.

Earth Day has come and gone, but there's still time to show off your green thumb. The Fourth Annual LOVE Your Park Week brings environmental service projects, parties and activities to area green spaces from Saturday, May 9 through Saturday, May 16.

One of the dozens of ways to kick off the week on Saturday, May 9, is a Mother's Day craft at the Washington Avenue Green (Washington Ave. and Columbus Blvd.). From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. kids can decorate their bikes, make a nature-inspired gift for Mom, and play games.

Use nature as your artistic inspiration on Monday, May 11 when Malcolm X Park (51st St. and Osage Ave.) hosts two hours of open art from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Best of all? It's free!

On Wednesday, May 13, grownups can play at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse (3500 Reservoir Rd.) with an adults-only party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to hors d'oeuvres from local food trucks, cocktails, drinks, games and silent auction, Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin will be honored with the 2015 Ida Newman Magic of Play Award.

During the spring and summer months, Sister Cities Park (18th St. and Benjamin Franklin Parkway) hosts BYO nights on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The second installment of the 2015 season takes place on Thursday, May 14 with live music and picnicking opportunities.

Take photos of Laurel Hill Cemetery (3822 Ridge Ave.) by moonlight on Friday, May 15. Shutterbugs of all skill levels (though previous experience is recommended) will be guided through the grounds for prime shooting opportunities starting at 8 p.m.

Saturday, May 16 is another day packed with great outdoor activities. Your options include Clark Park's (43rd St. and Baltimore Ave.) Party in the Park, where from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., you'll be treated to live music, food, kids activities and beer, or a two-hour cleanup starting at 10 a.m. at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (840 Hagy's Mill Road).
