Flyers announce new Flyers Charity Classic run and bike rides

Bernie Parent and Todd “The Fridge” Fedoruk pose at the Flyers 5K in October 2014. This year, the Flyers will host a new event in the summer that adds three different bike rides to the mix.

The Flyers are breaking into your summer months.

The hockey org is expected to announced Tuesday morning the first Philadelphia Flyers Charity Classic, a walk, ride, and bike event that will take place on July 16. All funds raised will go benefit Flyers Charities and the Flyers Alumni Association, who are jointly hosting the event.

Flyers Charities have hosted a 5K for five years running, but this year moves the date to the summer and adds cycling components not previously offered. The new courses will also take participants into different parts of the city and even out in the suburbs, depending on the course.

There are four ways to get moving with the Flyers this summer, all beginning at the Flyers’ home turf of the Wells Fargo Center. The first is a 5K Walk/Run that continues through the Navy Yard. Registration is $50 per person.

Then there’s the 10-mile family friendly bike ride that will take bikers up through South Philly to past City Hall to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and back through the Schuylkill River Trail. Registration is $50 per person or $100 for a family of four (kids under 16).

The 50K version of the bike ride takes bikers to Bala Cynwyd and Gladwyne and back through Manayunk to get back to South Philly.

For the hardcore among us, there’s a 100K bike ride that will take riders further onto the Main Line all the way out to Newtown Square, on to Malvern and back again.

The early-bird registration rates for both of the longer rides are $100 person.

All racers will have a timed bib, and receive a T-shirt, goodie bag and refreshments after they’ve completed the race.

Various Flyers alumni — Bob Clarke, Paul Holmgren, Bob Kelly, Brad Marsh, Joe Watson, Todd Fedoruk, Doug Crossman — are getting into the game and will lead their own teams which participants can join.

Entry is open now at For more information, call Flyers Charities at 215-389-9426.
