Engage in Civil War activities at the Mütter Museum during Refreshment Saloon

On Sunday, Nov. 8 Philadelphia’s Mutter Museum will travel back to late 1800’s with an entire day of Civil War-themed events featuring live actors, authentic foods, and classical music.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, Philadelphia's Mutter Museum (19 S. 22nd St.) will travel back to the late 1800's with an entire day of Civil War-themed events featuring live actors, authentic foods, and music.

The main attraction for the day, though, is Refreshment Saloon: an event involving why food affects our health and morale. Yes, we all know we need to eat to survive, but this exhibit shows examples of what measures soldiers would take during harsh times at war.

The happening is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the schedule is listed here:

11 a.m.
Quick and tasty: Try soda biscuits with pumpkin preserves: A highly transportable meal for soldiers
11:30 a.m.
Music for Morale: A live performance by the members of the 3rd Regiment of the USCT.
12 p.m.
Stay away, scurvy: Get a look at an assortment of pickles that helped thwart the illness.
12:30 p.m.
Pharmaceutical food session: The audience gets to decide what food is best to aid a soldier's sickness.
1 p.m.
Warm up with soup: Sample Hotchpotch, a root vegetable stew that was eaten during the Civil War.
1:30 p.m.
Music for Morale encore: The 3rd Regiment of the USCT will play their tunes for a final time.
2 p.m.
Flavored soda and amputation candy: Take a bite of a toy body part presented by the Franklin Fountain and flavors by Benjamin Rush Medicinal Herb Garden.
2:30 p.m.
Crank candy demonstration: Shane's Confectionery's Ryan Berley and Pavia Burroughs will create a sweet treat in front of guests.
3 p.m.
Gangrene ice cream: Franklin Fountain invites you to try this rather interesting ice cream and take part of an interactive exhibition entitled: Broken Bodies, Suffering Spirits.
4 p.m.
Finishing touches: The Civil War engagements come to an end, but the Mutter Museum will remain open through 5 p.m.

A ticket to Refreshment Saloon is included with general admission.
