Childish Gambino drops "Royalty" and brings a Queen of comedy on for a track

(Childish Gambino)

Childish Gambino is in the thick of his Camp Tour, and just when we thought his stock couldn't rise anymore, he goes and releases a new mixtape.  Royalty focuses on a number of different issues Gambino deals with, however it still possesses a lot of the playful elements that he has built his career on.  His insecurities are on display in a lot of the tracks, showing us the many different shades of Childish Gambino.

Gambino, aka Donald Glover, employed the help of a number of established rappers, namely Ghostface Killa, RZA, Bun B, and Danny Brown.  But there was one collaboration that stands out above the rest; Tina Fey.  Gambino and Fey have worked together in the past, but usually it involved writing jokes for 30 Rock.  Tina Fey's first rap appearance comes on "Real Estate", with a verse that closes out the track and the mixtape.  The unconventional collaborations didn't end there however; Beck makes an appearance on "Silk Pillow".

This mixtape is an example of the progression Childish Gambino is going through and what he hopes to continue.  He's come a long way from the 1.6/10 rating Pitchfork gave his first album, and in Royalty his creativity (and some bitterness) is on display.  His accessibility to reputable artists to collaborate with will only benefit his exposure and brand.  With 2 months ahead in his tour, Childish Gambino has a lot more to look forward to this summer.
