Celebrate the Dog Days of Summer on South Street

Celebrate the Dog Days of Summer on South Street

It’s a hot dog lovers dream! This month, Southstreet Headhouse District presents a five day festival to celebrate National Hot Dog Month. Beginning on Wednesday, July 18 the Dog Days of Summer  celebration starts off with Oscar Mayer Weinermobile’s 76th birthday and will continue until Monday, July 23 for National Hot Dog Day. You can expect activities for all ages and interests including hot dog happy hours, art gallery openings, a South Stree block party with live music, children’s activities and a hot dog costume contest. The schedule includes:

Wednesday, July 18:
6pm - lighting of the historic Levis sign at 517 S. 4th St, the original Levis company manufactured hot dogs in Philadelphia for over 100 yeard on South Street.

Thursday, July 19:
Hot Dog Happy Hours will be featured at Supper (926 South Street) and Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South Street).

Friday, July 20:
Hot Diggity (630 South Street) will have a gallery reception for the Hot Dog Art Opening featuring Hawk Krall. Krall is one of Philadelphia's leading illustrators and on of the nation's hot dog experts.

Saturday, July 21:
The Twisted Tail (509 S. 2nd Street) will be hosting Chill by the Grill from 3pm-7pm outside of their restaurant in Headhouse Square. Grilled hot dogs and refreshments (beer and homemade lemonade) will be served. Live entertainment will be on site.

Sunday, July 22:
The Dog Days of Summer Block Party will take place on the 600 block of South Street from 12pm-5pm. There will be children's activities including face painting, balloon making, arts and crafts, and a magic show from South Street Magic. Travel to the Phantom Hand for a Hot Dog Art Showing featuring illustration art and the official Dog Days of Summer t-shirt. Dress your pup up as a hot dog for the "hot dog" costume contest, the winning pets receive a prize from Hot Diggity and Pet Snobs. Also, join the Hot Dog Topping Competition and register with Keith at Hot Diggity. Registration is going fast!

Monday, July 23
A history of the Hot Dog Cart will begin at 12pm at Gus' Hot Dog Stand on 5th and South Streets. Pictures of historic hot dog carts will be on display.
