Several local up-and-coming bands showcase their newest music during a tape release party – Suicide Bong Tapes. Performers Janelle (pop's answer to Sonic Youth) and the Retreevers (an indie punk trio) headline the underground show produced by Philly's own FDH Records. The label showcase at J.R.'s Bar in South Philly also includes appearances by Population Zero, Nightfall and Spent Flesh among others. Preview tracks from these local music makers online.

Ice Jam with D.J. Polar Vortex
Sat., Jan. 18 (11 p.m.) at Voyeur (1221 St. James St.)

Head downstairs to Voyeur's Ruby Lounge for a hot set by the ultra cool D.J. Polar Vortex. The late night music showcase Ice Jam features dance classics from the 1970s through 90s, including memorable Motown grooves. Doors open to the afters-hours club at 11 p.m. with free admission before midnight.

Philly's own Michael LeLand performs Broadway favorites from the songbooks of Kern, Rodgers and Hart and Sondheim, as well gospel and spirituals, in a one-time-only afternoon of song – The Sacred and the Secular – to benefit a scholarship program named for the late Daniel Van Note. LeLand, a 25-year veteran actor, singer and producer, has helped develop dozens of new plays and received critical acclaim for his performance in the New Candlelight Theatre production of Driving Miss Daisy. Audiences may also recognize him as the singing Hoveround Guy.
