Union to host Mexican club Chivas

The Union announced this afternoon that famed Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara will visit PPL Park on Wednesday, September 1 at 8:00 p.m.

Chivas are by far the most popular team in Mexico, as they have had a longstanding policy of only having Mexican players on the roster. The club has featured some of the great players in Mexican national team history over the years, such as Francisco "Paco" Palencia and longtime El Tri captain Claudio Suarez

In recent years, Chivas has produced two of the most dynamic young players in the world. Midfielder Carlos Vela is now at Arsenal, and sensational forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez joined Manchester United this summer.

I figure even some of the new soccer fans among you have heard of Hernandez. He scored two goals at the World Cup for Mexico, and found the net just minutes into his United debut at the MLS All-Star Game.

Fortunately for the Union, Hernandez is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean now. But Chivas still have plenty of great players on their roster, including Adolfo "El Bofo" Bautista and Alberto Medina.

The match is included in season ticket packages as Game B. There is an exclusive presale for season ticket-holders to buy more tickets from now until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 15. As of now, the match will not be televised, though I would not be surprised if that changes.

I would expect to see a lot of Chivas' famed red-and-white stripes in the stands at PPL Park. The club has a huge following across the Mexican community in the United States, and Philadelphia is no different. Go down to the Mexican restaurants and tiendas in the Italian Market and you'll see plenty of Chivas jerseys hanging on the walls.

The Union's next game is tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Colorado. Here's the SEPTA schedule for the afternoon:
