Union's Alejandro Bedoya, Haris Medunjanin get national team call-ups

Bedoya will miss the Union's June 3 game at New York City FC, but Medunjanin won't leave until after it.

Updated May 31: It turns out that Medunjanin won't leave until after the Union's game at New York City FC on June 3. He asked the Bosnian FA if he could stay over here for tha game, and hs request was granted.

Updated May 30: Timmy Chandler is off the roster due to a hamstring injury. There will be no replacement.

The Union's Alejandro Bedoya and Hershey-born Christian Pulisic are among 27 players on a star-studded United States national team roster for June's World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico.

Players began reporting Sunday to Denver for a training camp ahead of the June 8 game against Trinidad, which will be played at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., a Denver suburb. From there, it's off to Mexico City to face eternal arch-rival Mexico on June 11 at the legendary Estadio Azteca.

Before the Trinidad game, the Americans will play a warm-up game against Venezuela on June 3 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City. Time and TV information are at the bottom of this post.

The warmup game is part of why camp began Sunday. All 15 Major League Soccer-based players in the squad will miss their clubs' games next weekend. That means Bedoya won't play for the Union at New York City FC on Saturday.

This past Thursday, Toronto FC manager Greg Vanney told reporters that all MLS teams knew before the season started that the game would be played, and collectively agreed to release their players for it.

Here's the full roster:

Goalkeepers (4): Brad Guzan (Atlanta United), Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge, Belgium), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Midfielders (8): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas),Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana, Mexico), Alejandro Bedoya (Philadelphia Union), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach, Germany), Dax McCarty (Chicago Fire), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund, Germany)

Forwards (4): Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Bobby Wood (Hamburg, Germany)

Sandy and Commerce City were chosen as the home venues primarily because of their high altitude. The 87,000-seat Azteca's always-raucous atmosphere is enhanced by its standing 7,200 feet above sea level. Sandy is at around 4,450 feet and Commerce City is at around 5,200.

Mexico will be facing not just the high stakes of World Cup qualifying, but a departure soon thereafter for the Confederations Cup in Russia. FIFA's quadrennial dress rehearsal for the World Cup begins on July 17, and El Tri's first game is a day later against Portugal.

The American and Mexican federations struck a deal to move their matchup two days earlier so that Mexico could have enough time to get acclimated in Russia. Mexico agreed to play the game at night, mitigating the heat and smog of summertime in its largest metropolis.

Under normal circumstances, the U.S.-Mexico game would be on Tuesday, June 13, with the other two games in CONCACAF's final round of qualifying.

"As difficult as it is, I think it's a level playing field for both teams," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said in remarks distributed by U.S. Soccer. "I can guarantee we will not be playing the same team from game one to game two. There will be a number of changes for the game in Mexico, so we've built a strong roster to allow us to do that."

If Medunjanin plays in the game, it will be his first appearance for Bosnia's national team since October 10, 2016, when Bosnia beat Cyprus at home in a World Cup qualifier.

Medunjanin has 54 caps, including two at the 2014 World Cup (of which one was against Lionel Messi's Argentina). He has scored six goals for his country, the most recent coming last September 6 in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying rout of Estonia at home.

Bosnia's squad features a number of big names, including Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begović, Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanić, Hertha Berlin striker Vedad Ibišević and AS Roma striker Edin Džeko.
