Notebook: Philadelphia tunes in for U.S.-Colombia

OTTAWA, Ontario - The United States' 2-0 win over Colombia in the round of 16 was a big hit with Philadephia sports fans. Fox Sports 1's broadcast of the game drew a 5.3 local rating, according to Nielsen, making it by far the most-watched program on broadcast or cable TV in the region Monday night. Nothing else within the game's time slot (8:00 to 10:00 p.m.) did better than a 4.3.

Philadephia was the No. 3 ratings market in the country for the game, trailing only St. Louis and Washington, D.C.

In terms of viewers, the national audience was 4.7 million. That's the third-highest total for any program in Fox Sports 1's two-year history, trailing only Games 4 and 5 of the 2014 National League Championship Series.

Australia will test Japan's beautiful game

Japan's dazzling 2-1 win over the Netherlands featured the Nadeshiko's first goal in a second half of any game in this tournament. And what a goal it was: the setup featured a series of perfect passes, a backheel, a shot fake and ultimately Mizuho Sakaguchi's crisp finish.

The Dutch deserve a lot of credit for putting up a great fight, but they ultimately lacked the savvy to convert their chances. Keep that in mind ahead of Japan's quarterfinal against Australia on Saturday in Edmonton.

The Matildas have speed to burn, and they'll press Japan high in a way that no opponent has yet. Expect Australia's attack to gets its share of chances because of that. When they come, Kyah Simon is a clinical finisher and Lisa De Vanna has a veteran's mix of savvy and confidence.

One for the history books

England defender Lucy Bronze had every reason to be proud of her sensational strike that sealed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Norway in the Round of 16. But she might end up regretting ahead of Saturday night's quarterfinal showdown with the host nation in Vancouver.

"The queen's on the coin for a reason," Bronze said, referring to Canada's 25-cent piece.
