Inside the Union's payroll

The Major League Soccer Players Union made its annual release of MLS salary figures over the weekend. I know I don't have to do much more than just post the numbers to get you all talking, so here you go.

I also wrote today about the unveiling of the U.S. national team roster for the Women's World Cup. Click here to read that post.

If you're really interested in MLS salary numbers, I put together a searchable, sortable spreadsheet with every player in the league that you can download here.

The Major League Soccer Players Union made its annual release of MLS salary figures over the weekend. I know I don't have to do much more than just post the numbers to get you all talking, so here you go.

The first number is the base salary, and the second number is guaranteed compensation. The guaranteed compensation number can be higher for many reasons, such as participation in Generation Adidas. All numbers are U.S. dollars.

Last year's numbers are here, if you want to compare them.

Agorsor, Christopher: 42,000.00 / 42,000.00
Califf, Daniel: 250,000.00 / 250,000.00
Carroll, Brian: 160,000.00 / 160,000.00
Daniel, Keon: 42,000.00 / 46,410.00

Farfan, Gabriel: 42,000.00 / 42,000.00
Farfan, Michael: 42,000.00 / 79,500.00
González, Juan Diego: 189,000.00 / 193,462.50

Holder, Thorne: 42,000.00 / 42,000.00
Houapeu, Levi: 32,604.00 / 32,604.00
Le Toux, Sebastien: 155,000.00 / 179,000.00
MacMath, Zac: 80,000.00 / 125,000.00

Mapp, Justin: 175,000.00 / 183,333.33
McInerney, Jack: 71,250.00 / 135,416.67
Miglioranzi, Stefani: 130,000.00 153,125.00
Mondragón, Faryd: 230,000.00 / 396,666.67

Mwanga, Danny: 120,000.00 / 226,250.00
Nakazawa, Kyle: 44,000.00 / 44,000.00
Okugo, Amobi: 85,000.00 / 168,000.00
Pfeffer, Zach: 55,000.00 / 65,000.00

Richter, Ryan: 32,604.00 / 32,604.00
Ruiz, Carlos: 260,004.00 / 306,670.67
Torres, Roger: 105,600.00 / 108,725.00
Valdés, Carlos: 180,000.00 / 180,000.00
Williams, Sheanon: 42,000.00 / 42,000.00

There's a lot to discuss there. I figure you all will focus on the salaries of Gonalzez and Ruiz, and I don't blame you. I would like to point one other thing out: 16-year-old Zach Pfeffer makes more than Keon Daniel, Michael Farfan, Kyle Nakazawa and Sheanon Williams.

Here are some other noteworthy salary figures from around the league.

According to the spreadsheet I posted above, the total amount of guaranteed compensation in MLS is $80,213,179.44. The average salary league-wide is $154,851.70, and the median salary is $80,050.00. The mode, or most common, salary is $42,000.

Castillo, Nery (CHI): 1,650,006.00 / 2,038,062.50

Editorial note: That's a heck of a lot of money for a player who isn't even on the Fire's roster right now. Castillo is currently playing for Greek club Aris Thessaloniki.

Chaves, Diego (CHI): 45,000.00 / 45,000.00
Ching, Brian (HOU): 375,000.00 / 412,500.00

Onstad, Pat (DC): 42,000.00 / 47,000.00

Editorial note: Onstad was originally hired by D.C. as an assistant coach. He became a player when Bill Hamid was injured in the offseason. I presume that number doesn't include whatever he's paid as a coach. According to the Washington Post, Onstad's player salary expires at the end of this month.

Parke, Jeff (SEA): 136,500.00 / 136,500.00
Ream, Tim (NY): 55,125.00 / 62,625.00
Rooney, John (NY): 48,000.00 / 58,000.00
Rosales, Mauro (SEA): 42,000.00 / 42,000.00

Editorial note: I find it interesting that Rosales and Chicago's Diego Chaves, two of the higher-profile South American imports to MLS this season, make so little money.

Salgado, Omar (VAN): 80,000.00 / 121,868.67

Zakuani, Steve (SEA): 90,000.00 / 188,000.00

Editorial note: Zakuani, Javier Morales and David Ferreira are all out injured for extended periods of time as a result of hard tackles suffered in recent games. I have said my peace about the matter already, but I am definitely still worried about who's next.
