WWE Smackdown Live results and observations (5/23/17): Jinder Mahal knows how to throw a party

Backlash was only two nights prior, but Smackdown Live quickly turned its attention to Money in the Bank by announcing two matches for the upcoming pay-per-view.

With Money in the Bank already less than a month away, it looks like Smackdown Live saw that there was little time to waste and left Backlash firmly in the rearview.

Smackdown Live wasn't stellar this week, but it was definitely enjoyable. Not to mention, it was rather efficient in moving on to the next chapter.

Before I go into my full analysis, here are the full match results from the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio:

- Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch def. Natalya & Carmella

- Sami Zayn def. Baron Corbin

- Tyler Breeze def. Jey Uso

- Fandango def. Jimmy Uso

- WWE Smackdown Tag Team championship – The Usos def. Breezango

- AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura def. Kevin Owens & Dolph Ziggler

Jinder Mahal knows how to throw a party

WWE shocked the world Sunday by having Mahal defeat Randy Orton to become the new WWE champion.

But by Tuesday, the feelings of shock and awe were replaced with a feeling of exuberance, as it was time for Mahal and the Singh Brothers to celebrate the monumental feat in grand fashion on Smackdown Live.

And what a celebration it was.

Mahal's celebration came complete with dancers, pyrotechnics and some words from the new champion, the Maharaja himself, Mahal.

As far as celebrations go, it was pretty epic and was easily my favorite segment that Mahal has ever been involved in.

It was way over the top and it should have been given that Mahal is a heel. And if there is one thing WWE is good at, it is being way over the top.

The question now is how long will Mahal be WWE champion? Well, he will hold the title until at least June 18, which is when Orton will enact his rematch clause at Money in the Bank, which will take place in Orton's hometown of St. Louis.

The match being in Orton's hometown should make for an interesting atmosphere at Money in the Bank.

Money in the Bank ladder match participants announced

I wasn't sure how the Money in the Bank ladder match was going to turn out when it was restricted to just one brand, but after seeing the lineup Smackdown Live commissioner Shane McMahon revealed Tuesday, I have no worries whatsoever.

That is because the men participating in this year's Money in the Bank ladder match are Styles, Corbin, Zayn, Ziggler, Nakamura and the current WWE United States champion, Owens.

Brand extension or not, that is one heck of a field for Money in the Bank.

One person we may not see until Money in the Bank is Zayn. For the second night in a row, Zayn defeated Corbin in a match, but paid for it dearly when Corbin attacked him after the bout.

Zayn was stretchered out of the arena as a result of the assault. I would assume that Zayn would be held off television for at least one week to sell the beating.

Where is Rusev?

Speaking of Money in the Bank, remember when Rusev demanded a title shot at the event and threatened to go back to Bulgaria if he didn't get what he wanted?

So what happened to that?

I could understand if WWE shifted directions and wanted to give Mahal a proper run with the title. I could also understand if Rusev isn't quite ready to return to action.

What I cannot understand is WWE simply ignoring this storyline all together. Just come up with some sort of explanation as to why Rusev isn't there. To me, that should not be all that difficult.

It is almost as if WWE thinks everyone was going to up and forget Rusev gave Smackdown Live an ultimatum a couple of weeks back. Maybe some fans out there did, but I know did not.

Fashion Files: The Final File

Tyler Breeze and Fandango were ready to turn in their badges to McMahon after falling to The Usos at Backlash, but McMahon had other ideas.

Instead, McMahon put both Breeze and Fandango in singles matches against Jimmy and Jey Uso, which meant Breezango was back on the case.

Breeze and Fandango made both of their matches open-shut cases, as they pinned The Usos with roll-ups merely seconds into each match.

They then challenged The Usos to an impromptu Smackdown Tag title match, which The Usos agreed to.

The title match was a lot of fun yet again, but did not feature all of the comedy from a couple of nights before. This time, The Usos and Breezango wrestled with a sense of urgency that I thought added to the drama of the match, which made it all the more heartbreaking to see Breezango come up short yet again.

I'm not sure where this will go from here, but The Usos and Breezango have provided with me some quality entertainment in their last two outings.

Fatal five-way elimination match scheduled for next week

Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that there will be a women's Money in the Bank ladder match at the pay-per-view this year, but that has yet to be confirmed.

What is known is that there will be a fatal five-way (WWE loves these fatal five-ways all of a sudden) elimination match to determine who will face Naomi for her Smackdown Women's championship at Money in the Bank on Smackdown Live next week.

The five women involved are Flair, Lynch, Carmella, Natalya and Tamina. Essentially, it is every other woman in the division not named Naomi or Lana, who is still in the "coming soon" stage of her vignettes.
