Former Divas Champion AJ Lee retires from WWE

Former WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee has decided to retire from in-ring competition, according to a story on WWE.com.

WWE's report didn't specify any details behind AJ Lee's decision, only that the company wished "her the very best."

AJ Lee, 28, signed with the WWE's former developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling, in 2009 and eventually took part in season three of NXT back when it was still a competition for a WWE contract.

Despite coming up short in the competition, she debuted on the main roster in 2011, but stepped to the forefront of the divas division in 2012. Since then, she's been in the middle of numerous high-profile storylines and moments.

It started at WrestleMania 28, which was her debut at the mega-event, when a kiss she planted on Daniel Bryan caused him to lose his World Heavyweight Championship in 18 seconds. The outcome spawned what is known today as the "Yes Movement."

AJ Lee then became involved in multiple love angles with Bryan, John Cena, CM Punk and even Kane before seemingly settling on Dolph Ziggler in late 2012 after she helped him defeat Cena in a ladder match. During the time her character was bouncing from superstar to superstar, AJ Lee had a brief stint as the general manager of Raw.

The night after WrestleMania 29 in 2013, she was by Ziggler's side when he cashed in the Money in the Bank contract to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

After splitting from Ziggler soon after, AJ Lee's singles career took off. It culminated with her first Divas Championship in June 2013. She held the title for a record 295 days. She won the title three times between 2013-14.

AJ Lee's success on WWE television was taking place while her real-life husband, CM Punk, was at odds with the company over a variety of issues. CM Punk abruptly left the company just weeks before WrestleMania 30, which was where AJ Lee eventually retained her Divas Championship.

At WrestleMania 31 back on March 29, AJ Lee teamed with Paige to defeat The Bella Twins. It was AJ Lee's second WrestleMania victory, improving her record at the event to 2-0.
