UPDATE: The WWE released a statement of sorts via Twitter regarding Alberto Del Rio's departure from the company.

The WWE usually doesn't acknowledge a superstar that was recently released on social media, so this was against the company's normal protocal.

According to ProWrestling.net, the reason why Del Rio (real name Alberto Rodriguez) was released from the company was due to a confrontation with a WWE employee where he reportedly struck the person in the face.

From earlier: Former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio was released from his contract, the company announced via its website Thursday.

According to the WWE, Del Rio’s release was due to “unprofessional conduct” after an apparent altercation with a company employee.

This comes a little more than a week after Del Rio’s on-screen personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez had requested his release from the company.

Del Rio made his WWE debut in 2010 amid much hype. He is the son of Mexican wrestling legend Dos Caras and the nephew of fellow legend Mil Mascaras.

He followed in his father and uncle’s footsteps by making a name for himself on the wrestling scene in Mexico before making his way to the WWE.

Del Rio was immediately placed in a prominent role on television upon his arrival to the main roster. It wasn’t long before he won the Royal Rumble in January 2011.

Later that year he won the Money in the Bank briefcase, which he cashed in at SummerSlam the next month to become the WWE Champion.
