Craft Hall: Brewing, baking, BBQ planned for Yards site

The whole operation in Northern Liberties will be transparent: the brewing, the milling of the flour, and the smoking of meats.

Yards Brewing Co. is moving to Fifth and Spring Garden Streets this fall, as part of a $19 million brewery, beer garden, tasting room, and event space.

Know that Yards' existing space –its home three-quarters of a mile away at 901 N. Delaware Ave. in Northern Liberties — will not stay vacant.

Avram Hornik — the entrepreneur whose holdings include Morgan's Pier, the Dolphin, and the summertime Parks on Tap series — plans to set up Craft Hall, what he's calling an authentic food-making and gathering space that focuses on approachable "slow" food with a bakery, brewhouse, BBQ kitchen and dining area that also will serve as a place to learn.

The whole operation will be transparent: the brewing, of course, but also the milling of the flour and smoking of meats.

Hornik has retained the services of brewery consultant Scott Morrison of Gravity Ales, who helped set up Saint Benjamin, Sterling Pig, and La Cabra.

Craft Hall also will give a new home to baking wunderkind Alex Bois, the James Beard Award-nominee who runs Lost Bread Co., equipping the operation with a New American stone mill, a Kornfeil thermal oil oven, and Austin Smoke Works custom-fabricated 1,000-gallon offset smokers.

The additional capacity will allow Bois and his breads to hit the farmer's market circuit next spring.

The retail side is expected to open in fall 2018.
