Boston bakery bans Philadelphia cream cheese

One problem: Philadelphia cream cheese has never been made in Philadelphia.

Now this Philadelphia-Boston football rivalry has moved from silly to downright cheesy.

The Boston Globe reports that Boston-based Montilio's Bakery will stop using Philadelphia cream cheese in its wares. The move is in response to Dottie's Donuts' decision to stop making "Boston cream donuts or any other 'New England themed' donuts" until "the Eagles win the Super Bowl."

One problem. Philadelphia cream cheese is merely a trademark used by Kraft. It's never been made in Philadelphia. Perhaps its Philly link is to Philadelphia, N.Y., as one history of the brand suggests.

Perhaps Montilio's cheese supplier is located in Pennsylvania, as owner George Montilio told the Globe that he would be buying his cheese hereafter from Wisconsin. In that case, his grand protest would simply be putting the screws to one business.

I await his response to my voice mail.
