Armenian style: apricotstone in Northern Liberties

Ara Ishkhanian challenges any kitchen in town to beat hand-rolled stuffed grape leaves, kibbeh kufteh, and lamb kebabs that his mother, Fimy, makes.

Northern Liberties can add Armenian cuisine to its restaurant roster.

Syrian-born Fimy Ishkhanian - who ran the now-shuttered Fimy's Kitchen locations in Narberth and Bala Cynwyd before moving to Toronto, where she ran a catering operation - has returned to the area in a low-key, lower-case way with apricotstone.

The BYOB opened Friday, Jan. 29 in Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties. The address, 1040 N. Second St. is a bit off; it's actually at American Street. The previous tenant was Sweet Spot Cafe.

Menu is here. It's also a good value; tasting menus run $20.

They've gone for a homey look. The 20-seat dining room is enlarged by plenty of lighting and a large mirror.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
