Yippee-ai-yo: Black Angus coming to South Street
This steakhouse/jazz club has an "urban cowboy" theme.
The east end of South Street is about to get a taste of the Old West.
Black Angus, positioning itself as a modest-priced steakhouse-cum-jazz club, is awaiting its liquor license to open at 117-119 South St., the ornately high-ceilinged former home of Tori's Brickhouse and Mallorca. So mid-February, maybe?
Manager Paul Goss explains that owner Lawrence Gilliam has horses and likes the western thang, hence a decor based on cowboy lore. There's also an adjacent wine bar, and in the back, another nod to Gilliam's interests: a full-size club with stage for jazz shows.
Menu is 99 percent done, though the chef has not been appointed.
Entrees will range from an $8.99 one-third-pound burger to $27.99 for a 24-ounce porterhouse.
Signature will be the surf and turf ($22.99): a 12-ounce rib eye served with six garlic fried or peeled shrimp.
