What J-Roll told Playboy

The Phils' star shortstop and his fiancee appear in a fashion spread in the June issue, out next Friday. In a quote, he mentions a New York team to beat -- and it's not the Mets.

What J-Roll told Playboy

POSTED: Friday, May 8, 2009, 11:32 AM

Phils shortstop Jimmy Rollins and his fiancee, Johari Smith, appear in a fashion spread in the June issue of Playboy, out next Friday.

The couple, who shot the feature over the winter in Florida, model fashions from designers such as Perry Ellis, French Connection and Nautica.

The mag quotes him thusly about baseball: "The Fall Classic? I see our boys vs. the Yankees. They spent all that money. They’ve got to be there. We’ve got a title to defend, so we’re going to be there.”

I'll have more about Johari Smith and what she is up to in my "INQlings" column in Sunday's Inquirer.

Jimmy needs to focus on fulfilling that "I'll bat .400 in May" promise he made a couple weeks ago before he worries about the Series.

With this pitching they'll be lucky to win 80 games. Oh and it's not good when you forget how to beat the Mets up.

I think you people need to smarten up -- this quote was taken OVER THE WINTER! It wasn't last week. His current struggles at the plate are not relevant to any WS prediction of his. You guys need to get a life. Calm down and take a xanax or something. Rollins struggling or not, this team is still in first place last I checked.

Stop friggin whining people. They won the World Series, who gives a rats a-- if they take the whole season off. They are in first place and it's only May. Far better than they were last year at this time.

I think we could all use a modicum of appreciation. It could be a lot worse. We could've been born mets fans. Now that would suck.

MLB would not be too happy with an I-95 northeast series. Their dream series would be Boston or NY against the Cubs or LA versus the Mets.

Focus on how to be a lead off hitter and swing level, then make predictions. My prediction - he is trade bait for a big time starter before the year is over. His act is wearing thin with the organization and is game is inconsistent.

mikemike and everyone else who is complaining about J-Roll; THEY asked, he answered, what's the problem? Should he say The Mets and Yanks? Marlins and Red Sox? He is confident that he has a good team. They're starters are bad, he's been bad, and they are still in first. Should we be worried with only 130 games to go? I'm still enjoying being called THE WORLD CHAMPION PHILLIES! Lets enjoy it! PS mikemike, ADAM EATON IS NO LONGER ON THE PHIILIES! (worst starter in baseball comment ;-))

Phillies are too concerned with their images rather than playing this year. Cole is trying to be like Madonna. But, the Phils are in 1st place because of their bats, but if their starters continue to pitch like they are and they have to go to the bullpen pretty early, things won't be looking good come August.

I agree with most people, i like the predictions, but he needs to put up or shut up. He is my favorite player in all of baseball, but he needs to maintain his focus. There are a lot of good teams out there that are gunning for the Phills. Oh and as for the Yankees, the best team money can buy that will not even make the playoffs. Go Phills!!!

It's a no-lose situation for Rollins. If they make it, it will be the 3rd-straight SNAP on the Mets. If they don't make it, few (sane) people will attribute the Phillies' fall to the Mets using Rollins' statement as incentive. Until the end of the season, this is just more fodder to joyfully toss at the hapless Mets fans and their choke-artist team!

Normally I would say that it is early, and not to worry so much. But the pitching is a very real and ongoing situation that MUST improve or we will slowly sink into the setting sun. The offense is clicking but you can't sustain that kind of hitting for long stretches, and when you face some of the REAL number one and two pitchers in this league.....well everybody knows what happens.I think even Charley is getting quite concernrd about this. Mainly because it's not just one guy.....it's every starter we have. I think Cole and Brett will come around (but how soon? and how much?) but the others seem to be spotty at best. I really wish I could be more optimistic, but I look back at last year and realize that it's just not the same.

We're 1 & 3 against those "choke artists". They have the best starter and two of the best relievers in baseball. I would not bet that our Myers and Blanton and Hamels will start pitching before Reyes and Wright and Delgado start hitting. When they do, we're doomed.

as much as i don't think much of jimmy as a "clutch" hitter, he is still one of the better all-around players in the game...re: his prediction that the phils will play the yanks in the WS? i like it, but i'm not quite sure the yanks have a shot...red sox will be tough; rays, while they probably won't make playoffs this year, do give yankees fits, perhaps enough to keep THEM out of the post-season... as for our starting pitching, we did NOT win it all last season because of them - we won it all last season BECAUSE of our bullpen/overall pitching staff, period...SOOOOOOO, this means we are on our way to another very strong performance... MY concerns lie in Charlie's in-game strategies, or lack thereof...For example, in a game like the pitcher's duel of the other night, how he doesn't have Feliz bunting with a runner on and no outs is beyond me...He, like most other "geniuses" in baseball today, think it's ok to ignore the actual game for big numbers/stats for the players...This is unacceptable...PLEASE PLAY TO WIN, AS IF EACH GAME MEANS SOMETHING - BECAUSE GUESS WHAT?? EACH GAME MEANS SOMETHING!! PK

As in real life, we should all listen to our "UNCLE", even if his name is EDDIE! - this is a PLAYBOY article (which speaks volumes in of itself) and J-Roll is being J-Roll. We are just over a month into the season, and to echo my Uncle - they're still in first place last time I checked. If you want to get more specific, last night Happ and the bullpen kept the Mets scoreless after a bad outing by Moyer. Maybe 2 Xanax should be served for each negative thinker?!?!?
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 4:18 PM, 05/08/2009
Had they Mets had this bullpen last year, they would have cruised into September ahead by 20 games. Their choke-artist relievers of last year are gagging elsewhere. K-Rod and Putz are the real deal. Parnell is fearless and deals 98 mph heat. We're doomed.

Loved the comment about tv ratings - who cares who watches the Series outside of Philly as long as the Phightins' are there playing? It's amazing that they've only played 15% of the season so far and people are already saying that the sky is falling! The pitchers will come around, J-Roll will start getting on base and causing trouble again, Ibanez is going to have a 30 HR 90 RBI season in Left, and Ryno is playing the best defense of his life - how can we lose???

Utley is a great ballplayer,i enjoy watching him field as much as i enjoy watching him hit.But it still surprises me how much our fans try to elevate one player over another. J-Roll will hit, his career statistics demonstrate that fact.As much as i am tempted i will not give in to the temptation to make a negative comment about the best 2d baseman in baseball. We have had a number of years to enjoy J-Roll, and now even a world series. We will win or lose as a team, anybody notice a more patient, slimed down, better defensive player at first base?

Forbidden Fruit must be jealous the Phillies have won a World Series in the new millenium why his Yankees choke(typical new york) every year with all that money they spend...and as other people have said with the way the pitchers have been and the way rollins has been hitting the phils are still in first..the mets are a joke as usual nothing to worry about anywhere else cuz the marlins are starting to fade as expected and the other two just suck at this point

Yanks could get there this year if they can start to gel together later in the season. I can't stand them, so I would love to see them flounder all year, but they have too much talent not to succeed unless injuries run them down. JRoll really needs to step up his play, he has not been the same since 2007.

Glad to see Jimmy has morals. Get back ot the cages and stop being a "celebrity." This guy thinks he is actually a superstar, when in reality he is just a bit above average shortstop. Great fielder, not great hitter. I wouldn't be surprised if his MVP season was roid enhanced.
