Waffles & Wedges: Snacks go for a walk

Baked potatoes and Belgium waffles are the specialty of this takeout shop at 1511 Pine St.

Sunday, April 26 is the target opening of Waffles & Wedges, a takeout specializing in Liège-style waffles and thick-cut, potato rods that are baked and not fried.

Andrea Capecci and Laura Judy are set up at 1511 Pine St., the tiny corner that previously was Mexico on the Square. Capecci got a taste for movable feasts through her Pbon's Fresh Phood truck, which continues.

The menu is still coming together but will be focused on waffles (regular and gluten-free), the wedges (sweet potato, waffle "fries" and regular potatoes), and sandwiches served on pretzel buns.

They're using eco-friendly cones, equipped with little pouches for dipping sauces, for the wedges as well as the waffles, which are cut into pieces known as Love Bites. They will have a full line of seasonings and sauces, including a barbecue sauce called Zing BQ that is made with Kenzinger beer.

They'll also serve a few varieties of Bassetts ice cream to top waffles, and Philly Fair Trade Coffee.

Aside from a few chairs inside and out, it will be takeout.

Capecci and Judy had a few feet of space in front of the counter. In search of a novel floor, they opted to use common cents: It's entirely surfaced in pennies, much like the reception area at Chinatown's Hop Sing Laundromat.
