Vecchia giving away pizza in Phoenixville

From noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, Frank Nattle plans to give away hundreds of margheritas that his trainees will bake at Vecchia.

One side-effect of the recent pizza boom is the heightened demand for good pizzamakers.

As Frank Nattle of the Phoenixville pizza destination Vecchia (249 Bridge St.) prepares for the imminent opening of his branch in downtown Wayne, he has been training a bunch of people to make Neapolitan pizzas. Nattle is many things, but he cannot be in two places at once. He's been working out of Phoenixville, as the oven in Wayne is not yet ready.

Nattle says it kills him to throw away good pizza. So from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, Nattle plans to give away hundreds of margheritas that his trainees will bake in Phoenixville.

To be a test subject, just show up. But I offer words of warning: Neapolitan pizza - pillowy outer crust, thin and floppy center - does not travel well. Or so I hear. If you happen to drive away with one of Nattle's pies within arm's reach on the front seat, the box will be empty before you reach Route 422.

Vecchia is one-half of a forthcoming pizza boom in Wayne, as Pino DiMeo and Scott Stein of Andorra's Pizzeria DiMeo are putting the final touches on Arde Osteria.

Yes, they straddle North Wayne Avenue across the street from each other - Vecchia is next to the Great American Pub, while Arde is on the corner of West and Wayne, across from the train station.

Here's more on the two parlors.
