Varalli: Going once, going twice...

The seafood restaurant is selling its equipment, including its bold nautical art.

It may be late in the season to decorate a shore house.

Perhaps there are other uses for an iridescent giant squid sculpture that is 34 feet long and 3 feet wide. Or wall waterfalls made of glass. Or hand-blown starfish light fixtures, bronze cast squid tentacle door handles, and serpent wall sconces.

Joe Varalli, whose closed his Avenue of the Arts Italian restaurant Varalli in early July, is having Comly Auctioneers sell off the contents - the artwork, a baby grand piano as well as equipment such as refrigeration, ovens, chairs, hostess stands, etc.

Inspection will be on site from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. After that, Comly will post the items online and the sale will end noon Aug. 6.

Varalli, who has operated restaurants on the corner since early 1989, said the properties housing Varalli and the upstairs sibling Perch Pub will be torn down, probably next year.

Perch Pub, whose lease terms are different, will remain open on the second floor till next spring, Varalli said. The pub, which fronts along Locust Street, is the former site of Upstares at Varalli.
