Update: Restaurant openings

Sports bar. Bar bars. A bowling alley that's a bar. BYOBs. A market. Pizza. Burgers. A Kevin Sbraga project.

To update the crop of projected restaurant openings over the next eight weeks or so:

Mere hours old is The Crazy Sofa, a sushi/small plater, next to the Regal theater in Newtown Square (the former Roux 3).

Any day now, Collingswood will see the debut of Local Market and Cafe (714 Haddon Ave.), which will sell foods to go or eat-in and will have a coffee bar, deli, butcher, bakery and grocery sections.

Friday, Nov. 21 was day one for Latin Flavor, a Caribbean cafeteria at 627 South St.

Girard, the Fishtown brasserie with the tipping-discouraged policy, opened Friday, Nov. 21. (Another fun fact: In addition to the hourly wages, health insurance, vacation and sick pay, owners are offering pool time to employees next year at North Shore, the Northern Liberties swim club.)

DAVIDsTEA opened its first regional store at the King of Prussia Mall on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Jake's Sandwich Board in University City is looking at next week.

Jose Garces opens the lounge beneath Rosa Blanca (707 Chestnut St.) around Nov. 25.

Dec. 1 is the target for Petit Roti, the Euro rotisserie that Caribou/Zinc's Olivier Desaintmartin is building at 248 S. 11th St.

Early December is the target for Founding Fathers, the sports bar at 1612-18 South St.

Market @ Maglio has Dec. 3 written down for the grand opening at Third Street and Pattison Avenue.

SouthHouse, a bar-restaurant at 2535 S. 13th St. (near Shunk), says it's opening the first weekend of December.

The revived Mainland Inn in central Montgomery County - and it's a stunner, based on the tour I got over the weekend - is shooting for December.

El Poquito, the Mexican restaurant replacing Chestnut 7 in Chestnut Hill, is aiming at the first week of December.

Liberty Hall Pizza is expected to open at Canal Studios (243 N. Union St. in Lambertville, N.J.) in early December.

Iron Hill Brewing/Ardmore is up for mid-December.

Juniper Commons, Kevin Sbraga's homage to the Reagan years, is targeted for mid-December at Broad and South Streets.

Joe's Steaks suggests mid-December for its spot at Frankford and Girard Avenues.

U-Bahn, the subterranean bar at 1320 Chestnut St. from BRU's Teddy Sourias, is saying mid-December.

Second week of December is the goal for Smokin' John's, the BBQ spot next to Winnie's Le Bus, at 4258 Main St. in Manayunk.

P'unk Burger, the burger joint from Slice Pizza at 1823 E. Passyunk Ave., is looking at the second or third week of December.

The rebuilt Hawthornes at 11th and Fitzwater Streets is looking at opening the week before Christmas. Chris Fetfatzes says the growler system he has developed for beer will be revolutionary, allowing bottles to be filled, capped and be delicious for seven or eight months.

Palladino's, the East Passyunk splash from chef Luke Palladino (1934 E. Passyunk Ave.), will race Santa's sleigh - right before Christmas.

I'm hearing "late December" for BonChon, the Korean chicken outlet/bar at 1020 Cherry St.

Brick & Mortar, the bar-restaurant by Franklin Mortgage and Lemon Hill alum Mike Welsh at the Goldtex Building in the Loft District (315 N. 12th St.), is up for "just after New Year's." P.S. Welsh just retained the head-bartending skills of Franklin alumna Christina Rando.

Absent official word, I will speculate that late December/early January could mark the debut of Big Gay Ice Cream, next to Juniper Commons on South Street just east of Broad. I'll play a similar hunch with regard to the nearly-two-years-in-the-works South Bowl (19 E. Oregon Ave.), the sibling to North Bowl.

Tria Fitler Square, at 23d and Pine Streets, is saying "early winter." Well, Tria is not saying it. Buildings don't talk. But the principals of the project do.

Owners of Calexico, the New York-rooted Mexican coming to 16th and South Streets, may be finished work in December but in a bid to train staff and iron out kinks may choose to wait till January.

I'm hearing early January for Bing Bing Dim Sum (1648 E. Passyunk Ave.), the Asian small-plater from Shawn Darragh and Ben Puchowitz of Cheu Noodle Bar.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor, the NYC dim-sum specialist, is looking at early January at 218 N. 13th St.

Whetstone, the regional American from the Brauhaus Schmitz folks at Fifth and Bainbridge Streets, is looking at mid-January.

The Vesper, once a dining club on Sydenham Street (near 15th and Locust), is being redone as a supper club; expect a portion to open in January.

Stop back. As I learn more, I'll add.
