Union Taco moves in Manayunk, adds a bar

In the move, effective March 17, Union Taco Tequila y Cerveza picks up triple the seating (including a deck) and a bar stocked with tequila, mezcal, Mexican and local craft beers, and wines.

Nick Farina's Union Taco has moved a block in Manayunk into the triple-level restaurant space at 4161 Main St., the former home of Anastasi Seafood, Beast & Ale, Bisou, Gemelli, and MangoMoon.

In the move, effective March 17, Union Taco Tequila y Cerveza picks up triple the seating (including a deck) and a bar stocked with tequila, mezcal, Mexican and local craft beers, and wines. (Happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Friday means $3 margaritas and a Mexican Citywide Special of a can of Tecate and a shot of tequila for $5.)

On opening day, Farina is offering a comp beef taco with each purchase.

The previous Union Taco location, at 4229 Main St., will be converted in early April into Napoleon Burger, which Farina will run with his 11-year-old son, Alex.

Reclaimed wood and Day of the Dead-inspired artwork adorn the walls. Multiple big screen TVs play sports. Chef de cuisine Janine Glassmoyer's menu offers tacos, tortas, salads, burritos, and side dishes. It's full service, though you can order takeout at the counter.

While discussing the business partnership with his son, Farina said the lad announced that he would donate his salary to the Anti Bully Squad, a foundation run by NFL kicker Brandon McManus of the Denver Broncos, a North Penn High and Temple grad.

Manayunk is seeing somewhat of a resurgence of late. Jake's & Cooper's Wine Bar reopened after a major flood. Gigi, a popular BYOB, moved up the block and picked up a bar in the former Maya J space at 4371 Main. (Gigi's previous space is being used for private parties.) Sona Pub & Kitchen will be opening soon at the former Kildare's (4417 Main), while a stylish bar-restaurant called Somo is getting closer at the former Rubb barbecue at 4311 Main. Also, a bar-restaurant is fixing to take over the former Derek's at 4411 Main.
