Sources: Tony Danza to shoot series in Philly

POSTED: Sunday, July 26, 2009, 1:34 PM

Actor Tony Danza has been nosing around for a school willing to host a reality series for A&E in which he stars as an English teacher and documents the school's goings-on.

That search began in New York City, headed to Yonkers, N.Y., shot out to Colorado, and then came to Philly, as I reported last month. Danza also considered a school in Lowell, Mass., and made several visits to Philly's Washington High. City officials, including Mayor Nutter, were eager to have the show, which is expected to show the host school in a good light.

Now, my sources have identified the school as Philly's Northeast High, at Cottman and Algon Avenues in Rhawnhurst. One sticking point was clearance, as the student participants are juveniles.

I hear that he'll be teaching one period a day for a few months starting in the fall semester.

Representatives of the district and the show were not available for comment.

Unfortunately, most TV shows set in Philadelphia are garbage such as Hack, Cold Case, Thirtysomething, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Why can Philadelphia attract a half-way decent TV show such as Melrose Place?

I teach in Philadelphia and this is extremely offensive. He has no college degree and let's face it, is not very good in at speaking proper English. Will they show the students telling him where to stick it?

"Who da Boss, yo?" Probably will work out as well as his boxing career and talk show. On the floor.

“I teach in Philadelphia and this is extremely offensive. He has no college degree and let's face it, is not very good in at speaking proper English.” legend1: How do you know that he doesn’t have a degree? In fact he does, and has contemplated teaching for many years. He was the only regular actor on Taxi that had a degree, yet his character was written as not very bright. Your statement is also offensive to the many good people that teach in Philadelphia that have strong accents from their upbringing, whether from the south, India, or Brooklyn. “NE High? Bring your bulletproof vest Tony D.” DonkeyBong: On what data do you base this statement? NE High has a record of being one of the safest comprehensive high schools in Philadelphia. Both of you should know your facts before you post opinions. Sheesh… how do we teach students to check their facts before they make statements or write papers when the adults can’t even do it?
