Tom's Dim Sum opens in Chinatown
The original Dim Sum Garden is gone.
Many Chinatown visitors were introduced to soup dumplings and other dim sum dishes at Dim Sum Garden, a forlorn-looking, fluorescent-lit dumpling house in the tunnel beneath the Hilton Garden Inn on 11th Street in Chinatown.
A split-up occurred in late 2013, when a chef/partner opened a new Dim Sum Garden at 1020 Race St. The original closed for a few months but reopened, much as it was, under Tom Guo, part of the circa-2008 opening crew.
Now, Guo has scrubbed (literally) the original DSG off the map. He leased a space next door, ripped out his kitchen, and installed an attractive bistro-style dining room with an adjoining 24-seat private room.
It's now called Tom's Dim Sum (59 N. 11th St., 215-923-8880). Menu is pretty much as it was in the old days.
Shanghi-style menu hits all the Chinatown basics.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
