The 2013 Philly restaurant forecast

What's coming up.

The Philly restaurant forecast for 2013 is for respectable growth in the scene. Big projects are few. It's as if the economic slowdown that began several years ago is finally catching up.

The first opening of 2013 most likely will be the third branch of OCF Coffee House, coming to 2100 Fairmount Ave., where Mugshots was. It opens New Year's Day.

Next up, on Jan. 2, will be Gennaro's Tomato Pie (1429 Jackson St., 215-463-5070), the South Philly cousin of Lombardi's.

The restaurateurs behind the larger projects tend to have other locations — opposed to the model of a single, deep-pocketed angel investor.

"February" is the target for Serpico (yes, that's the name), Stephen Starr's partnership with Momofuku chef Peter Serpico at 604 South St.

Chinamoto is coming this winter to 777 S. Broad St. next to Tashan; it's an offshoot of another restaurant in the Midwest.

Townhouse Kitchen & Bar, yet another Midwesterner, says "second quarter 2013" for Commerce Square at 20th and Market Streets.

Ocean Prime, a Midwest multiunit, has a summer reservation for 15th and Sansom Streets.

Marc Vetri and his crew will open a branch of Osteria midyear at Moorestown Mall, joining a Firebirds Wood Fired Grill.

Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant — the 10th — has a summer date in Voorhees Town Center.

We'll have to wait till late in the year for Volver, the Jose Garces boutique restaurant at the Kimmel Center.

Though I'm told that a Cheesecake Factory is coming to 15th and Walnut Streets, perhaps 2013 will bring the actual announcement.

More immediately:

Honey's Sit N Eat will fling its doors open sometime in January at 21st and South Streets.

Andy's Diner is looking at a January opening on Bethlehem Pike in Spring House, Montgomery County.

Cedar Point Bar & Grill, from the former A Full Plate crew, comes to Fishtown in January.

The Foodery, proferring bottled beer and food, looks ready for January at 1710 Sansom St.

Hokkaido, an Asian bar-restaurant, is coming soon to 1316 Walnut St.

Jerry's Bar, once a hole-in-the-wall shot-and-beer at 129 W. Laurel St. in Northern Liberties, is getting a face lift at the hands of contractor Bill Proud. No one is talking, but Marshall Green — chef-owner of the late Cafe Estelle — will be chef.

A branch of IndeBlue, the Collingswood Indian restaurant, is looking to open this winter at 205 S. 13th St. in Center City.

Sophia, from chef Christopher Lee and Joe Messina, should take shape this winter at 1623 E. Passyunk Ave.

Agricola, which puts French Laundry alum Josh Thomsen in the kitchen of the former Lahiere's in Princeton, is pegged for Feb. 1.

Feb. 1 is the target for Bufad, a wood-fired pizzeria at 13th and Spring Garden Streets from Michael and Jeniphur Pasquarello of Cafe Lift and Prohibition. (They're planning a whole-animal restaurant for later the year in Fishtown.)

February is the guess for Pizzeria Beddia, from pizza purist Joe Beddia, in Fishtown.

February is the forecast for PEnnsylvania-6, a bar-restaurant at 114 S. 12th St., where Tweed was.

"This winter" is the expected rollouts of the New York coffee destination Joe (1845 Walnut St.) and the D.C. sandwich spot Devon & Blakely (18th and Market Streets).

Goat Hollow, the Mount Airy landmark, could return sometime this winter.

April 1 is the target for Taqueria Feliz, the Manayunk location for the Cantina Feliz/La Calaca Feliz duo.

Early April is the forecast for Noord, a Northern European BYOB from Joncarl Lachman, at 11th and Tasker Streets.

Spring seems to be the target of Victoria Freehouse, a British tap at 10 S. Front St.

The Garage, a sort of "indoor food truck meets bar" at 1231-33 E. Passyunk Ave. from Jason Evenchik (Time, Bar, Vintage, Growlers), is looking at spring.

Spring is the word on Bardea, an Italian-leaning American coming to the Chestnut Hill Hotel.

Perhaps spring will see the new restaurant from Dan Clark and his Pub & Kitchen crew at 22d and Spruce Streets.
