Swiss Haus Bakery opening branch in Old City

The shop will sell coffee and pastries and will offer seating.

Swiss Haus Bakery, based on 19th Street below Market Street near Rittenhouse Square, is saying "first week of June" for the opening of a branch at 313 Market St. in Old City, in a former hobby shop.

The shop, open seven days, will sell coffee and pastries and will offer seating. Baking will be done on premises.

Swiss Haus traces its lineage to the Swiss Pastry Shoppe, which stood for 82 years at 35 S. 19th St. before it closed abruptly just before Christmas 2007.

In early 2008, entrepreneur Jim Hausman reopened it as simply Swiss Pastries and, facing unpleasant correspondence from the previous owner, rebranded as Swiss Haus.

Current owner Joshua White still has the services of head baker Donna Berman, a 17-year veteran.
