Sweet Charlie's, the Thai ice cream shop, to open branch in Rittenhouse

It's coming next spring to 1921 Walnut St.

The Thai ice cream craze continues.

Sweet Charlie's, which opened one of the city's first outlets for the made-to-order rolled ice cream early last summer at 711 Walnut St., is expanding.

Kyle Billig, 19, who left college to start the business with his brother, Jacob, 21, has a lease in hand for 1921 Walnut St. near Rittenhouse Square, which he said would become the burgeoning chain's flagship location.

They expect to open next spring.

It would become location number three, as a second location opened over July 4 in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

The new location will also sell crepes. Other locations will carry them, too.

More locations are on the way for Fishtown and University City, he said.

(Charlie is the family's Woodle - that's a soft-coated Wheaten terrier crossed with a poodle.)

Thai ice cream starts with supercooled metal platters. A worker pours on a creamy base and adds flavorings and toppings, scraping up the mixture into rolls that are then served in a cup or over a long doughnut.
