Steve's Prince of Steaks sets a Friday roll-out

Steve's Prince of Steaks at 16th and Chestnut Streets. (MICHAEL KLEIN / Philly.com)

If you're a dieter or happen to be observing Lent, beware the Ides of March*.

Friday, March 15 marks the soft opening of a great temptation: the Center City outpost of Steve's Prince of Steaks, the Northeast Philly-rooted shop. It will fill the former Krispy Kreme location at 41 S. 16th St., across from Liberty Place.

Things get underway at lunchtime.

In an interview with Philadelphia Life, founder Steve Ilescu told how he ran an auto-repair business but had the itch to get into food in 1980: "I had done it since I was 15 and I had opened my own place. By 30, I wanted to make a change and if I didn’t do it then, then I wouldn’t be able to.”

* No Caesar salad on the menu.

Steve's Steaks is overpriced Steak-Um, and not very good. I'd rather make the trip to Jim's Steaks.

@LDP, you dont have a clue... Jims is over cooked and chopped horse meat. You probably are a repeat customer to buy crack from the cook.

I hear it is the drugs that keeps Jim's customers coming back.

Let's not fight, brothers! I love Jim's, Steve's, AND drugs!

Nothing can last there when the prices are the same inside the food court. Plus, you have all those carts too? No way. This place will fail. There goes his dream.

Joyce, I realize you hate the world, but not everyone is a failure like you.

Jim's has slipped over the years, but still beats the hell out of Pat's and Geno's -- nothing but swill. Still the best: Tony Luke's, Dalessandro's, and any good neighborhood steak shop.

For crying out loud, Tony Luke's is the most overrated place in the city. His bread sucks and the meat is terrible.

Steve's is way better than Pat's, Geno's, Tony Lukes, Jim's, etc. Pat's/Geno's/Tony Lukes downgraded the quality due to hype/fame. Jim's is ok but kind of bland. Dalessandro's and Chubby's are ok if you add peppers and ketchup.

You're right on the money, Niko. Steve's blows those tourist traps right out of the water. And, Jim's steaks are just plain old brutally bland. Best steaks in the city: Steve's and Frusco's - both in the (former) great Northast.
