Craft cocktails in central Montgomery County?

Standard Tap veterans and longtime friends Cody Ferdinand and Gerard Angelini have pulled a Green Acres by opening The Butcher and Barkeep, a pub that recently took over for the East End Ale House at Salford Square (712 Main St. in Harleysville; 267-932-8407). The third partner is chef Jeffrey Sacco, former chef of the Craft Ale House in Limerick.

Ferdinand and Angelini became fast friends after meeting in Northern Liberties at the Tap in 2005. They started a band while learning the restaurant trade. "Family life took over and the band, in turn, faded," Ferdinand explains. "Gerard moved with his family to Harleysville. I began to manage the Tap and then followed suit to Harleysville with my family."

They did the renovation themselves, with the help of master carpenter John Diminio, installing warm colors and adding reclaimed barn wood torn from a barn a mile from the restaurant.

Sacco's seasonal menu of 10 small plates, 4 sandwiches, and 4 entrees also features 5 blackboard items.

Bar list includes craft beers, a strong cocktail program, and some draft wines. They serve bottle-aged sazerac, bottle-aged vanilla bonded bourbon, bottle-aged black tea vodka, and barrel-aged rye manhattan and barrel-aged negroni.

It's open from lunch through dinner Monday to Saturday, and Sunday for brunch and dinner.
