Spuntino: Wood-fired pizza in Northern Liberties

Fourth-generation Sicilian pizzamakers are doing wood-fired Neapolitan pies on Second Street.

When Ambrogio's son Aldo immigrated to the United States, he at first tried construction work but then opened pizzerias, including Aldo's in Holland, Bucks County, and Angelo's in Somerton (which cousins now own).

Aldo's sons, Salvatore and Robert, followed the family vocation, opening a shop called Spuntino - as in "snack" - in Doylestown a couple of years ago. And on Wednesday, Oct. 14, they'll open a second location in a new building at Second Street and Fairmount Avenue in Northern Liberties, next to Bourbon & Branch (the former Liberties).

Sal and Robert are keeping it as simple as you can get at Spuntino (701 N. Second St., 267-930-8486). The menu consists of six salads and 16 wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas from a Stefano Ferrara oven.

Prices, which start at $11, are about a buck lower than the norm, yet the brothers use quality ingredients, including canned San Marzano tomatoes.

Sal Carollo said they would add sandwiches to the menu, using the oven to bake the bread. There's no liquor license and no plans to apply for one.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
