'World's highest beer garden' opens in Center City

The region's beer garden scene is looking up.

Top of the Tower, the event space on the 50th and 51st floors of Three Logan Square (the former Bell Atlantic building at 1717 Arch St.), is now running a beer garden with Doug Hager and the team from Brauhaus Schmitz.

It opens June 15, to coincide with Center City Sips, and it will run Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, starting at 5 p.m., for the foreseeable future.

Inside are picnic benches, lending a fun contrast to the formerly buttoned-up Bell Atlantic boardroom. Outside are tables and seating, plus some dynamite views. The 51st floor actually has two boardrooms and balconies; SkyGarten will fill up the east side first before opening the west side.

Hager said he imagined people using SkyGarten as a starting point for an evening in Philly.

They're billing it as the "world's highest beer garden." Perhaps that claim holds if you're referring to the height above average terrain, but Zugspitze - atop Germany's highest mountain peak - is at about 9,700 feet in elevation.

Michelle Curtis runs the place, while Jesse Cornell's beverage program includes four draft lines and multiple offerings in cans from Germany as well as local craft selections, cocktails, and wines.
