Simply Shabu: New in Chinatown

Simply Shabu's debut is Monday, Jan. 13 at 1023 Cherry St., in a walk-up storefront.

Philly's Chinatown now has a restaurant dedicated to shabu, the Asian fondue/hot pot that involves cooking raw meat, seafood and/or vegetables in a broth at the table.

Simply Shabu's debut is Monday, Jan. 13 at 1023 Cherry St., in a walk-up storefront.

Owner Dennis Tuan, raised in Princeton and educated at Rutgers, spent six months in Taiwan, working with his brother on a food startup. While that business went nowhere, he gained a love of shabu. He and his wife, Kate, rented the building in shabu-starved Philly. Only a few Chinatown spots offer shabu, and not all the time.

Menu is here. Prices, which include broth and a choice of udon or rice, start at $10 for vegetarian.

Most of the 40 seats are at a chef's counter equipped with induction cookware; there are a few tables as well.

It's open for dinner weeknights, and for lunch and dinner on weekends.
