Shola to the Piazza

The mercurial chef has unveiled plans for a small spot called Speck.

Shola Olunloyo, who's been delighting foodies with ambitious private meals under the name StudioKitchen (after stops at Bleu and Blue Angel) has taken to his blog to spring details for his first restaurant.

Name: Speck.

Under construction now, it'll open in what I believe will be late spring in the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties, near the video screen and across the way from The Swift Half in a 2,600-square-foot spot on the Hancock Street side.

Concept: New American. Typically Shola of him to say: "[we] will make an attempt to get some local fairly priced items, we will feature them but we will not jump on the dubious 'farm to table' train until we actually start a farm."

It'll have 65 seats, plus 12-seat bar, plus outdoor space for cocktails, plus "a kitchen counter that seats 5 people who are looking for a more interesting dining experience," he writes. "This will be an allergy and food preference free tasting menu at the kitchen's discretion up to 10 courses. The kitchen counter will only be booked by a fully paid non-transferable non-cancelable online reservation system almost exactly like the draconian proclivities of Momofuku KO."

Let him tell the details.
