Rooster Soup Co., a luncheonette with a charitable side, opens on Sansom St.

Chef Erin O'Shea, formerly at Percy Street BBQ, offers a menu with a Southern-ish spin.

Monday, Jan. 23 marks the opening of Rooster Soup Company, a luncheonette with a do-good side, on the lower level of 1526 Sansom St. (between Oscar's Tavern and Ladder 15).

Chef Erin O'Shea, formerly at Percy Street BBQ, offers an easy-on-the-budget menu with a Southern-ish spin.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Breakfast (till 11 a.m.) includes the stick-to-your ribs fare such as egg and cheese biscuits; sticky buns; biscuits and gravy; and rice, grits, homemade chorizo, and eggs.

Lunch includes four soups (including a matzo ball soup made with smoked schmaltz), four salads, and four sandwiches, while dinner will include a nightly blue-plate special - steak frites, beef stew, meat loaf.

There is a vegetarian item in each category, including a lentil sloppy Joe with avocado and fried onion.

Desserts include coconut cream pie, Dutch apple pie, and shakes.

There are four beers on tap, canned wine, and classic cocktails.

Boxwood Architects' design includes a 18-seat counter and bar and booths along the side in the main room. Up a few steps in the rear are tables able to seat larger parties.
